FIVE WAYS WITH NEON

Traditionally the months of Jan and Feb tend to be the dullest months of the year, give or take the odd very sunny crisp cold day.  However, this year February is proving pretty much to have shot us into Summer rather early.

So no better time than a blog post on neon - the bright new trend hitting us squarely between the eyes.  Big on the catwalks this is a predicted trend for 2019 and looking round the shops, I notice the high street is attempting to pull us out of our winter reverie with their own slew of neon fashion.

Whether this is a trend with enough longevity to see us through Spring and into Summer is yet to be seen but personally I'm all for adding some brights into the wardrobe mix.  You don't have to go full on, head to toe and make like a zebra crossing beacon - even a neck scarf or a sherbet bag would suffice if you don't want to go for a big investment piece.  Being the wrong side of 40 doesn't mean I have to shy away from such an out there trend - I for one am loving the head to toe look in the form of a fluid / softly textured yellow suit or one of Zara's overcoats over something a little more demure.

Mix and match is definitely the key to this trend - neon colour clashing works very well.  Yellow and pink, pink and green, orange and yellow - the combinations are endless.

If you want to dip your toe in and get in on the trend with a subtle addition, try pairing one piece of neon with a neutral colour - black will make the neons pop and white additions like a crisp shirt or white loafer will, in contrast, tone the vibrancy down a little.  Add a neon pair of tights under a black pencil skirt or a zingy rollneck under a utility boiler, the choice is yours!!!

Here's some looks I've put together to get you on the neon super-highway (click on links to buy) ..........

THE COAT
I'm loving long tailored overcoats at the moment (I think they need their own blog post - watch this space).  This neon coat from Zara works well when keeping everything else very neutral but with an element of fun.

THE BOILERSUIT
Go all out, relaxed and edgy with a vibrant pink boilersuit.  If you don't want to go so bright, Top Shop have a great pink neon acid wash one out at the moment which I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they restock.  I've paired this hot number with my favourite trainers of the moment from Crime London although this would look just as great with a pair of Doc Martens as seen here in Lucy and Yak's photo.  You need a belt with this boiler so I've added a soft touch with the crossbody bag belt.  NB: This Lucy & Yak boilersuit is 100% organic with certified low impact dye.

THE SKIRT
Don't be afraid of colour combining (or clashing some may say) with neon.  Pink and orange is a perfect combo but not often attempted.  This would possibly be too much with a bright coat so I've added a muted soft blush pink into the mix allowing the other items to take centre stage.

THE SUIT
Some would be of the opinion that a suit in a bright colour would be a step too far but this one would work on many levels.  Keep the other items pretty soft and muted and keep the focus on the suit.  Saying that, a green pussy bow blouse (check out Zara's organza number) would work really well with this too.

THE KNIT
This has to be my favourite and everything I would wear!!  Acid green toughened up with pleather joggers and star sneakers (Ishikawa are a fabulous alternative to Golden Goose but quite hard to find) but given a tailored look with a Max Mara style faux fur overcoat.

And if you really want to hide under the neon radar but still doff your cap towards the trend, how about a cute little hot pink watch I found in Bershka ............
